The hostel commemorates the inspirational life of Lt. Shri Jaichandlalji Karwa, patriarch of the Karwa family, who made invaluable contributions to Maheshwari community & the society at large.
Shri Jaichandlalji Karwa was born in a very humble family in the year 1917 in a small village Sardi (Dis. Nagaur, Rajasthan). He lost his parents at a very early age. His quest for livelihood took him first to Biratnagar (Nepal), Kolkata & then finally to Mumbai. Back home, he shifted his family to Sujangarh (Dist. Churu, Rajasthan). He was ambitious & hardworking yet led a very simple life. His wisdom, maturity & composure made him a flagbearer amongst fellow Maheshwaris & the business community. He was popularly called as Bhaiji.
Shri Jaichandlalji Karwa was prudent & diligent in all spheres. That brought him in close association with the Bangur & Somani groups. He eventually set up his own business & aided by his family, traded in a wide array of products ranging from cloth, process house, sugar, jute, yarn, paper, cement, copper wire, garment etc. in Mumbai, Delhi & Kolkata. In partnership with the Somani family of Mumbai & also Bangur family of Kolkatta, he ventured into real estate & construction business. He held the distinction of constructing the first multi storey building ‘Nirmal’ in South Mumbai in 1961-62 & the first Multi Storey ‘Rajendra Ratna’ in Suburban Mumbai in 1971. He conceived & developed the first housing complex Bangur Nagar & Mahesh Nagar in Goregaon, Mumbai.
Coming from a very humble background himself, Shri Jaichandlalji Karwa was always eager to help others. He was a patriarch & mentor for many. Besides, he contributed generously for setting up of education, medical & stay facilities. He built school, dispensary, road, tube well, temple & dharamshala at Sardi & Sujangarh. He contributed generously towards construction of Maheshwari Bhawans at various places & rooms at religious places Tirupati, Pushkar, Hardwar, Vrindawan, Ayodhya, Somnath etc. He was the Chairman of Bangur Nagar Vidya Bhawan, Mumbai till his death. He built a school ‘Ayodyabai Karwa Rajkiya Vidyalaya’ in memory of his wife Lt. Smt Ayodhyabai Karwa for which he was conferred the title of ‘Bhamashah’ from the Rajasthan Govt. In order to recognize his contributions to the society, the Municipal Corporation of Mumbai named a busy road leading to Bangur Nagar as Jaichandlal Karwa Marg.
Shri Jaichandlalji Karwa passed away in the year 2010 at the age of 93. He is survived by his 4 sons, 5 daughters & grandchildren. His family lives upto the legacy with philanthropic work in the field of health, education & religion.
